History

The Sutlej Medal was sanctioned by General Order on April 17, 1846, in commemoration of the victory in the First Sikh War (1845-1846). It was the first campaign medal awarded with clasps to all ranks in recognition of service in the Sutlej Campaign. British and Indian Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and enlisted men of the British Army and the Honourable East India Company were eligible or the award.

Clasps inscribed with the name of the campaign battle were awarded to denote additional battles the recipient participated in. The following clasps were issued:

1. "FEROZESHUHUR"
2. "ALIWAL"
3. "SOBRAON"

There are four versions of the medal that differ in the reverse inscription of the first campaign served by the recipient.

There may be additional versions of the Medal that differ in composition.
