History
The Messina Earthquake Commemoration Medal was instituted by the King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele III, on January 4, 1909. The Silver Medal was awarded to Officers and men of the British Royal Navy and to members of the Mercantile Marine who aided in the relief operations of Messina following the tragic earthquake on December 28, 1908, which took the lives of a third of the population of Messina.
An associated, special Messina Earthquake Merit Medal (see ITL271) was also issued by the King of Italy which was awarded in recognition of distinguished assistance, medical treatment, and other services provided to the victims of Messina during the aftermath of the earthquake. The Messina Earthquake Merit Medal was awarded in Gold, Silver, and Bronze. A 40mm medal was awarded to institutions and organizations, and a 30-35mm medal to personnel.
