History

The decoration was instituted on July 3, 1929 on account of meteorologist Prof. Gustav Hellmann's 75th birthday and awarded to Prussian meteorologists. It was initially a state award of the Weimar Republic, and from 1936 to 1945 it was a non-wearable award of the Luftwaffe (after a change in design).

The 1st pattern medal shows the head of Hellmann, facing to the viewer's left, with the name "Isenstein" (the designer) underneath, and the inscription "Gustav Hellmann" around the rim.
The reverse shows a Prussian eagle, and the inscription reads: for merits as an observer of the Prussian meteorological institute.
The medal was awarded in a red leather case with white interior.

The 2nd pattern medal still shows Hellmann's head, but in a different design (note especially the hairstyle). To the right underneath the collar is the designer's name, "Rud. Bosselt", and the inscription "Gustav Hellmann" runs around the bottom now. To the left are the numerals "19", and "36" to the right.
The reverse shows a first pattern "droop tail" Luftwaffe eagle with swastika superimposed over clouds and rays of sunlight. The inscription reads: for merits to the German national weather service.
The medal was awarded in a black leatherette case with a 2nd pattern Luftwaffe eagle in gold on the lid.
