This badge was founded by Wilhelm II to recognize Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and enlisted men who had successfully graduated from Flying School.
In order to graduate, a pilot needed to pass two flight examinations and have their proficiency as pilots rated by the Inspection Command for Military Air and Motor Vehicles.
Following the start of the First World War, combat pilots were expected to demonstrate practical aerial combat skills before receiving the badge.
At some point during the war only award certificates were conferred and recipients were expected to purchase their own badges.
The exact number of badges issued is unknown, as records containing that information were destroyed during the bombing raids on Postdam in 1945.
