The Medal for Merit in the Arts was founded by Grand Duke Nikolaus Friedrich Peter and was conferred upon male and female artists, including actors and virtuosi, who made outstanding contributions to the field of art.

The Large I Class Gold Medal was added as a grade on August 20, 1901. It could only be conferred upon individuals who had previously received the Large II Class Gold Medal.
