History

The Gallantry Medal (Nut al-Shuja'at) was originally instituted by King Ghazi in April 1934 (see IRQ108) but was modified following the Iraqi Revolution in 1958. The Medal is awarded to Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and other enlisted personnel of the Iraqi Military Forces in recognition of demonstrations of supreme gallantry. The Medal may also be referred to as the "Medal for Bravery."

A gold crown emblem is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote subsequent qualifying acts of gallantry.

There are multiple versions of the Medal which vary by the obverse design. Early versions were established by General Qassim and feature an obverse design of the Republican emblem superimposed onto a red enamelled triangle. In 1963, after the fall of General Qassim, the Republican emblem was replaced by an Iraqi eagle. It is thought that an additional design was instituted post-1990, but more research is needed.
