As Soviet awards are numbered and come with a booklet stating these award numbers, it is possible to determine the recipient of the award. Therefore, the value of each specific higher grade award depends on service records, actions for which the award is received, and branch of the Armed Forces. An award given to a successful pilot or submariner would be generally much more valuable then an award given to an ordinary infantryman.

History

The Medal for Combat Service was established on October 17, 1938, the same day the Medal for Bravery was created. This medal was conferred upon Army, Navy, Border Guards, Internal Troops, and USSR citizens in recognition of assistance in successful combat operations. The medal was awarded for skillful, bold combat actions displaying initiatives, causing the successful accomplishments of a unit's combat mission; for courage displayed in the defense of the state border; for accomplishments in military and political training, developing new military equipment, or supporting high level of a unit's training.

Prior to the Great Patriotic War more than 21,000 were awarded. Approximately 3,000 were awarded for the Battles at Halhingol and Khasan. By 1981, over 5 million had been awarded.

The Medal for Combat Service has two types. The Type II, five sided suspension (1943-1991) was made from one or two pieces. It has four variations.

Variation I has a silver soldered ring at 12 o'clock. It is manufactured exactly like Type I, Variation III except for the five sided suspension. Many veterans switched their early medals to a five sided suspension, and it is impossible to tell if the medal was originally on an early suspension. The serial numbers range from roughly 550,000 to 922,000.

Variation II has a ring soldered onto the medal, the only difference in comparison to Type I is that variation II has a curved sword hilt on the obverse. The serial numbers range from roughly 1,100,000 to 2,974,0000.

Variation III has a "U" shaped suspension made with the medal and the serial number is stamped on the reverse. The serial numbers range from 2,500,000 to 3,256,000.

Variation IV has a circular ring made with the medal. It does not have serial number usually but some duplicates with serial numbers have been observed.

The obverse Russian inscription translates to: "For Combat Service". The obverse also features the Cyrillic script for the USSR.
