This Order was named after Alexander Nevsky, who was the great military leader that drove the Teutonic Knights from Russia.

It was instituted as a military award during WWII. It was conferred upon brigade, regimental, divisional, company, and platoon commanders for outstanding leadership and gallantry.

Variation I has the the center medallion attached the enameled star by 2 rivets, while variation II is soldered on. Variation III has no stickpin on the reverse.

The serial numbers on variation I range from roughly 1-500, variation II 500-2700, variation III 2700-13500.

The obverse Russian inscription translates to: "Alexander Nevsky".
