History

The Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky was instituted on October 10, 1943 by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. This Order was instituted during the Ukrainian Liberation of 1943 by Nikita S. Khrushchev, who convinced Stalin of the award's validity. It was named for the Ukrainian leader Bogdan Mikhailovich Khmelnitsky (1595-1657).

This Order was largely awarded to officers and men engaged in the liberation of Ukraine. The Ukrainian front had the largest number of partisan units operating in its area and it is the only order with statutes covering specific partisan activities as an eligibility factor in receiving the award.

The II Class was conferred upon corps commanders, division commanders, brigade commanders, regiment commanders, and their chiefs of staff and deputies, as well as commanders of partisan detachments and their chiefs of staff and deputies, in recognition of: successful penetration of a fortified belt of defences, successful river crossings, raid into the enemy rear area that significantly halts or delays enemy communications; a well-organized partisan detachment resulting in the destruction of a key enemy strongpoint, garrison, liberation of Soviet individuals from German forced labour, and destruction of communications or transport.

The Type I, II Class is made of gold and silver and is constructed of three pieces. There are four variations.

Variation I has no rivets on the reverse. The only serial number observed is 107. On the only example known, there is a small linear die break from the left side of the outer ring that runs from the 9 o'clock position to halfway down the left-pointing saber blade. The serial numbers range from roughly 1-150.

Variation II has 2 rivets, at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions which are 18mm apart. The two examples seen are numbered 236 and 341 and have the same die flaw as Variation I. The serial numbers range from 200-350.

Variation III has 3 rivets on the reverse that are evenly spaced around 7-9mm from the screwpost. The serial numbers range from 600-910.

Variation IV has two rivets that are 16mm apart (very similar to Variation II), and the serial number is located higher than on the Variation III pieces.

The obverse Russian inscription translates to: "Bogdan Khmelnitsky".
