History

The Order of the Red Star was instituted on April 6, 1930, and the statutes were created on May 5, 1930 and therefore this Order shares the identical statute with the Order of Lenin. It was awarded for defending the USSR during wartime, and for ensuring state security during peacetime.

It was conferred upon servicemen of the Army and Navy, Border Guards, Internal Troops, associates of the Committee of State Security USSR , and elements of the Organs of Internal Affairs. It could also be conferred upon military units, ships, enterprises, establishments, and other organizations. Prior to the Second World War, the Order of the Red Star had been awarded 21,500 times. During the war, approximately 2,860,000 were awarded. By 1991, a rough total of 4,000,000 had been awarded.

The star is made of silver, and the arms are in red enamel. The reverse of all decorations have a screwpost in the center and nearly all will have either a Goznak, Mondvor or Monetny Dvor mark. The star measures 28.5mm to 30mm between the tips of each adjacent star tip and 24.5mm to 25mm from the center to any star tip. The obverse of the decoration stays the same for the 60 years of its existence, except for the angle of the soldier. This Order has three types.

Type II, three piece construction, was the most commonly awarded Order of the Red Star. The soldier on the central medallion faces to the viewer's right. All employ the screwback reverse and the regular screwback plate which measures 33mm. There are several variations. These variations are not easily grouped into any particular serial number range but they range from roughly 1,000-3,800,000.

Early Transition Piece: this variation was rare and were the first to be put in production after the Goznak pieces ceased. Only four pieces have been observerd, none of which present a makers mark and two of which have a very short screwpost (6mm).

Mondvor Reverse: this variation presents the Mondvor mint mark above the screwpost. This mark is either large and curved or small, and slightly curved. The former is associated with earlier serial numbers than the latter. The serial number is hand-engraved located below the screwpost with a one-tier screwpost base. The lowest serial number observed for the larger, curved mint mark is 2,647 and the highest is 7,821, while the lowest for the smaller, slightly curved mint mark is 8,644 and the highest is 10,428.

Early Monetny Dvor Reverse, with Screwpost Base: this variation has the Monetny Dvor mark in two separate stamps above the screwpost. The screwpost has a 6mm flat one-tier screwpost base. The edges of the star are perpendicular to the reverse. The lowest observed serial number is 11,849 and the highest is 319,702.

Monetny Dvor Reverse, No Screwpost Base, Flat Star Edges: this variation does not have a srewpost base, but it has the flat star edges. The lowest serial number observed is 265,992 and the highest is 556,842.

Monetny Dvor Reverse, Semi- to Full-Flared Edges: this variation is the most common of the Red Stars. Early on, serial numbers were hand engraved, but quickly moved over to a rotating tool. The mint mark is done with one stamp or two, and there are several variations in the size of the mark. The lowest serial number observed is 529,486 and the highest is 3,831,218.

The obverse Russian inscription translates to: "Workers of the World, Unite!", and the Russian letters for USSR.
