History

This Medal was established by Emperor Menelik II in 1903 in commemoration of the building of the Jibutil-Dire Daoua (Dijibouti-Adis Abeda) railway. It was awarded to those involved with the successful completion of the project, and later, to those involved with other construction projects of national importance.

The reverse is dated "1895" in Amharic, which refers to the Ethiopian calendar, and not the Western calendar.
