The Order of the Gold Medal of Independence is conferred upon Malian citizens in recognition of contributions made to the independence of Mali, another African state, or Africa in general. It may also be conferred upon foreigners, but only under exceptional circumstances.

The obverse features the portrait of Mamadou Konaté. The obverse inscription translates to "The Grateful Fatherland," and the reverse inscription translates to "Love, Courage, Devotion, Republic of Mali."
