History

The Medal of August 1st was awarded to Angolan military personnel in recognition of loyalty to the cause of Angolan independence.

The I Class Medal was awarded to military and political leaders of FAPLA (Forças Armadas Populares de Libertação de Angola, "People's Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola"), and the II Class Medal was awarded to enlisted men. Both classes could be awarded posthumously.

The reverse inscription translates to "People's Assembly, People's Republic of Angola."
