History

The Order of Patriotic Merit is conferred upon Burundian military personnel in recognition of distinguished service and acts of bravery, and upon Burundian civilians in recognition of life-saving actions. It may also be awarded posthumously.

The Officer is awarded to Senior Officers for 5 years of service, to Junior Officers for 9 years of service, to Non-Commissioned Officers for 17 years of service, and to soldiers for 25 years of service.
