History

The Royal Order of Prince Rwagasore was instituted by King Mwanbutsa IV in 1962 in commemoration of his son Prince Louis Rwagasore who had been a champion for Burundian independence before his assassination in 1961. It was conferred in recognition of meritorious service rendered to the nation, especially in the promotion of independence and national unity, but it is no longer awarded.

There are two versions of this Order. The first, awarded from 1962-1966, features a royal crown. The second version, awarded after 1966, does not feature a crown.
