History

The Order of Friendship was established by the President of the Gabonese Republic in 1960, but it was later suppressed in 1971 when it was replaced by the National Order of Merit. It was conferred by the President upon Gabonese citizens in recognition of contributions to the international prestige of the nation. There was an annual limit of 50 military awards and 250 civil awards.
