This cross was conferred upon members of the Bophuthatswana Prisons Service for exceptional gallantry in the line of duty.

The Bophuthatswana Prisons Service was formed in March 1977 and was assimilated into the Department of Correctional Services in 1994; therefore, Bophuthatswana Prisons Service decorations and medals became discontinued in 1994.
