History

This medal was intended to be awarded upon members of the South African Defence Force for death-defying gallantry in situations of extreme danger; however, this award was never awarded.

The Honoris Crux Decoration was instituted on July 1, 1975 replacing the Honoris Crux. All four classes of Honoris Crux Decoration were replaced by the Nkwe ya Selefera (Leopard Decoration for Bravery) on July 25, 2003. This medal was discontinued in 1993.

It may also be known as the Diamond Cross of Honour. The value of this medal increases with supporting documentation.
