This medal was conferred upon members of the South African Police in recognition of gallantry in in the line of duty, saving a life/property, or fighting crime.

It is also known as the "King's Police Medal for Distinguished Service." It was renamed the Queen's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 1952, which was later replaced by the South African Police Star for Distinguished Service in 1963, and the Decoration for Distinguished Service in the South African Railways Police Force in 1966.
