This medal was conferred upon all South African military personnel in recognition of at least 18 months of service during the Boer War.
It was always issued with the Queen's South Africa Medal. It was also never issued without a bar with the exception of approximately 600 nurses.
Two clasps were awarded with this medal: "SOUTH AFRICA 1901" and "SOUTH AFRICA 1902".
