This medal was conferred upon members of the South African Police in recognition of gallantry in in the line of duty, saving a life/property, or fighting crime.
It may also be known as the "Queen's Police Medal for Distinguished Service." It was previously known as the King's Police Medal for Distinguished Service (1937-1952). In 1963, this medal was replaced by the South African Police Star for Distinguished Service and the Decoration for Distinguished Service in the South African Railways Police Force in 1966.
