The Medal for Coimbra (Medalha do Forte de Coimbra) was instituted by Emperor Dom Pedro II on July 8, 1865 for the army, and on April 21, 1868 for the navy. It was founded to recognize the services of those Brazilian troops who defended the Fort of Coimbra against invading Paraguayan forces on December 28, 1864.

It was authorized with three grades according to the rank of the recipient. The Gold Medal was awarded to Senior Officer, the Silver Medal was conferred upon Officer, while the Bronze Medal was for enlisted men.
