History

The Medal for Rio de Prata (Medalha de Campanha do Rio da Prata) was instituted in Brazil by Imperial Decree in 1852, to reward Brazilian navy personnel in recognition of the services of those who took part in the Battle of the River Plate in 1851-52.

The Medal was authorized with three grades based on the rank of the recipient. The Gold Medal was suspended by a neck ribbon and awarded to Generals. The Silver Medal was wore on a chest ribbon and granted to Officers. Finally, the Zinc Medal was awarded on a chest ribbon and conferred to enlisted men.
