The Medal for Outstanding Merit (Medalla por el Mérito Sobresaliente) was instituted by the province of Potosí in recognition of the outstanding actions of those veterans who fought at the War of the Pacific (1879-1883.)

It is limited information regarding to the institution of this Medal.

The War of the Pacific was a conflict between Bolivia and Chile for the territory of the Atacama Desert. Bolivia was allied with Peru against Chile.

There is known versions of this Medal either with variety of years of issue, or without any.

The Medal features an obverse inscription that can be translated to "The Departmental Assembly of Potosí," and a reverse inscription that can be translated to "Rewarding to Outstanding Merit [1880, 1876.]"
