The Legion of Honor Marshal Andrés Santa Cruz y Calahumana (Legión de Honor del Mariscal Andrés Santa Cruz y Calahumana) was founded originally as the Legion of Bolivian Honor (Legión de Honor de Bolivia) by the government of the great Bolivian revolutionary hero Marshal Andrés Santa Cruz y Calahumana on November 17, 1835. The Legion was re-established as Legion of Honor Marshal Andrés Santa Cruz y Calahumana, and it was extended to award foreigners by the government of Carlos Mesa on July 11, 1989.
The Legion is classified into two types that are based on the modification of 1989, Type I contains information regarding to the Legion of Bolivian Honor, while Type II includes information regarding to the Legion of Honor Marshal Andrés Santa Cruz y Calahumana.
In Type II, the Legion of Honor Marshal Andrés Santa Cruz y Calahumana was re-established by Supreme Decree on July 11, 1989.
The Legion is awarded to national or foreign citizens, and institutions, in recognition of meritorious services that contributed the development of the diplomacy and international relations of Bolivia. The Legion is awarded in postmortem as well.
The Legion is awarded by the Council of the Legion that it is composed by the President of Bolivia, in grade of Grand Collar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in grade of Grand Cross, and the General Director of Ceremonial State Affairs, in grade of Grand Officer.
The Legion consists of six grades; Grand Collar, Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.
The Legion features an obverse inscription that translates to “Legion of Honor Marshal Andrés Santa Cruz y Calahumana."
