History

The Great Bolivian Order of Literacy and Adult Education (La Gran Orden Boliviana de Alfabetización y Educación de Adultos) was established in Bolivia by decree on July 9, 1970. The Order was created as the highest educational recognition for those who philanthropically supported the National Plan of Literacy.

In 1970, the Bolivian government designed the National Plan of Literacy which main objective was the inclusion of national majorities into the cultural and educational development of the nation.

Currently, the Order is conferred upon Bolivians and foreigners in recognition of important contributions to literacy campaigns in Bolivia.

The Order consists of four grades: Grand Benefactor of Literacy, Commander, Officer, and Knight.
