History

The Order of Columbus (Ordem de Colombo) was established in Brazil on June 6, 1890, by the provisional government of Manoel Deodoro da Fonseca, as replacement of the three ancient military orders (Order of Aviz, Order of James of the Sword, and Order of Christ) that were abolished at the same time.

The Order was named in commemoration of Christopher Columbus, and it was conferred to Brazilian citizens and military personnel, as well as foreigners, in recognition of meritorious acts displayed in the defense of the new government and the development of Brazil.

It consisted of four unlimited grades; i.e. Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Officer, and Knight.

It's life span was minimal, as the order was abolished in 1891.

Original awards are not known.
