History

The Order of Military Merit Antonio Nariño (Orden del Mérito Militar Antonio Nariño) was instituted by decree on June 13, 1942. Since then, it has been modified three times, in 1944, 1952, and 1988, each.

It is currently awarded to member of the Colombian Armed Forces for acts of bravery and devotion to duty within military service, as well as for acts of merit and outstanding service, particularly in the fields of discipline, scientific, research, and other non combat-related areas.

The Order's grades are Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, Knight, and Member. It is not clear if the grade denotes the rank of the recipient.

The Officer, Knight, and Member do have enamel. However, it is not clear if the higher grades have enamel or not.

Antonio Nariño (1765-1823) was a Colombian ideological precursor of the independence of New Granada (present day Colombia) as well as one of its early political and military leaders. He translated the Declaration of the Rights of Man from its original French into Spanish and printed several copies from his own private press.
