History

The Order Carlos Fonseca Amador was established in Nicaragua after the Sandinistas seized power in 1979. It was founded to commemorate those who fought at the Sandinista revolution previous years.

It is awarded to civilians and military personnel who share and defend the ideals of the Sandinista government.

It is not clear how many grades this Order has.

The Order was named in honor of Carlos Fonseca Amador (1936-1976) who was the founder and early leader of the Frente Sandinista de LiberaciĆ³n Nacional (Sandinista National Liberation Front). He trained in Cuba and the Soviet Union, and he was killed in combat in 1976.
