History

The Military Order of Ayacucho (Orden Militar de Ayacucho) was established in Peru on August 9, 1932, however some resources claim that it was instituted on November 30, 1944. It was founded in commemoration of the centennial of the Battle of Ayacucho on December 9, 1824, wherein Peru won its independence from Spain. It is the highest military award within the country.

It is currently awarded for exceptional merit to military personnel of the Peruvian Armed Forces, as well as to foreign Officers who have rendered valuable service to the Peruvian Government.

The Order has five grades, these are Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight.
