History

The Order of Hipólito Unánue was established in 1955 to reward medical professionals who have contributed in medical sciences and have improved the public health in the country. It is conferred upon nationals and foreign nationals.

The Order's grades are Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight.

The Order's official makers are Zuloeta S.A., Lima, and the National Mint, Lima. It is unknown if there are more makers of this Order.

The Order was named in honor of José Hipólito Unánue y Pavón (1755-1833), a Peruvian physician, professor, and politician, who created the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of San Marcos. He was one of the founders of the Order of the Sun, and he worked in the cabinet of San Martin in Peru during his rule.
