History


The Order of the National Defense Legion (LegiOn de la Defensa Nacional) was founded by the Venezuela's senate presumably in 1903. It was founded to unify Venezuela, which was under European economic block. It was awarded to civilians and military personnel in recognition of extraordinary services in the defense of the rights and privileges of Venezuela as an independent and sovereign country.

The Order consists of three grades, I, II, and III Class. The I and II Class were accompanied by a breast star. However, this information is not confirmed, due to the Order was only granted four times during the months following its creation.

The I Class was limited to 25 recipient, and it was exclusively conferred upon the President of the Republic, Foreign Heads of State, and the Sovereigns of friendly nations.
