The Order of General Omar Torrijos Herrera was established in Panama on December 14, 1982 in honor of then president Omar Torrijos who died one year before. It was reformed by law on July 13, 1995, and again on January 11, 2006.

It is awarded in both civil and military divisions. The first consists of four grades, i.e., the Extraordinary Grand Cross, Grand Cross, I Class Commander (with breast star), and Commander. The military category consists of three grades: Grand Officer, Silver Grand Cross, and Knight. It might be granted posthumously.

General Omar Torrijos Herrera (1929-1981) was the former commander of the Panamanian National Guard and leader of Panama from 1968 to 1981. He became leader after the overthrown of Arnulfo Arias in 1968, and he is recognized for the Torrijos-Carter Treaties which returned the Canal Zone sovereignty to Panama on December 31, 1999.
