History

The Cross for Azcapotzalco (Cruz por Azcapotzalco) was instituted by the imperial regency of Mexico in 1821. It was awarded to independent Mexican forces that defeated the royalist Spanish troops at the city of Azcapotzalco in 1821. This was the last battle before the signing of the Treaty of Cordoba which recognized the Independence of Mexico.

The Cross was awarded with three classes according on the extent of the recipient's involvement in the battle. I Class Cross was awarded to those who were wounded in action. II Class Cross was conferred upon those who distinguished themselves in the battle, while III Class Cross was awarded to those who participated in the battle.

The Cross features different enamels depending on the class. I Class Cross features red enamels, II Class Cross features blue enamels, while III Class Cross has white enamels.

The Cross has no obverse inscription.

The II Class Cross features a reverse inscription that can be translated to "He Distinguished Himself in the Great Battle of the 19th of August of 1821, for the Independence of Mexico."

Some versions depict MEXICO instead of MEJICO on the reverse inscription.
