The exact date of the institution of the Air Force Nurse Badge is uncertain, but it is believed to have been established after the Second World War.

The Air Force Flight Nurse Badge is awarded to commissioned officers who are trained as registered nurses in recognition of the completion of qualifying training as a military flight nurse and advanced studies in aerospace medicine and upon the completion of a period of in-flight instruction and observation.

The Air Force Flight Nurse Badge is awarded in 3 grades. The Cheif Wings are awarded as the highest grade, Senior Wings and the second grade, and Basic Wings as the third grade. The Basic Wings are issued upon the completion of training and qualification as a flight nurse.

There are multiple versions of the Basic Wings which vary by composition.
