The Department of the Army Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service was authorized by the War Department on December 29, 1945. The Gold Medal is awarded to Army civilian employees in recognition of significant achievements which benefits the Department of the Army. Qualifying service may include the accomplishment of major duties, development of significant inventions and innovations, outstanding leadership, and voluntary acts of courage and risks of personal life.

A miniature version of the Gold Medal and a lapel pin are available for private purchase.
