History

The Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service was established by the Department of Defense in 1947. The Gold Medal is awarded to private citizens, politicians, non-career federal employees, or foreign nationals in recognition of exceptionally distinguished service which significantly contributes to the Department of Defense. Qualifying service may involve personal sacrifice and service which was motivated by patriotism, good citizenship, and public responsibility.

Subsequent awards are denoted by bronze, silver, or gold palm devices worn on the ribbon.
