History

The Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service was created by the Department of Defense to reward non-career Federal employees, private citizens, and foreign nationals for contributions and support to Department of Defense functions. Service must be that of a lesser degree than to merit the award of the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service, but which is still significant to warrant recognition.

Subsequent awards of the Silver Medal are denoted by bronze, silver, or gold palm devices worn on the ribbon.
