The Secretary of Defense Medal for the Defense of Freedom was created by the Department of Defense on September 27, 2001. The Medal is awarded posthumously to the next of kin of civilian employees of the United States Department of Defense who were killed while serving under hostile action. Personnel who were wounded during service and non-Defense personnel who were involved in Department of Defense activities may also be eligible for the award.
