The Secretary of Defense Medal for Valor was created by the Department of Defense as the highest civilian award for valour. The Medal is awarded to government employees and private citizens in recognition of voluntary acts of heroism or sacrifice involving a risk to personal safety in the face of danger. Qualifying service includes acts related to a Department of Defense activity which benefits the Department of Defense, or where a Department of Defense employee is saved by an individual or an employee saves an individual from danger.
