History

The Merchant Marine Defense Medal was initially established by Executive Order on August 29, 1944, as the "Merchant Marine Defense Bar" presented as a ribbon only award. On May 30, 1988, the Merchant Marines Decorations and Medals Act authorized the creation of the Merchant Marine Defense Medal. The Medal was awarded to any member of the Merchant Marine who served between September 8, 1939, and December 6, 1941. It is estimated that approximately 17,091 Medals were awarded.
