The Pacific War Zone Medal was initially established as the "Pacific War Zone Bar" by Public Law on May 10, 1944, until it was reinstituted as the Pacific War Zone Medal by the Merchant Marines Decorations and Medals Act on May 30, 1988. The Medal was awarded to members of the Merchant Marine who served aboard vessels operating under or for the United States War Shipping Administration in recognition of service in the Pacific War Zone Theatre of Operations, in the North and South Pacific and in the Indian Ocean, between December 7, 1941, and November 8, 1945. Approximately a total of 177, 926 Medals were awarded.
