History

The Drug Enforcement Administration Purple Heart Award was established on January 5, 1996, and awarded to personnel who were wounded or killed while serving in the line of duty and upholding the drug laws of the United States. The award was expanded in 1998 to include state and local law enforcement officers killed or wounded in the line of while working with the DEA.

The Medal may be awarded posthumously.
