The Department of State Award for Heroism was created to replace the Department of State Award for Valor. The Silver Medal is awarded to employees of the State, the United States Agency for International Development, and Marine Guards assigned to diplomatic and consular duties. The Medal recognizes acts of courage and outstanding performance during difficult and dangerous situations; such as under the threat of physical attack or harassment or under the risk of personal safety. The award is most often presented to Foreign Service Special Agents of the Diplomatic Security Service.
