History

The State Department Award for Valor was created to reward State, United States Agency for International Development, and Marine Guard employees who served in diplomatic and consular facilities for acts of valor or outstanding performance under difficult and dangerous situations. Qualifying service includes acts of valor performed under the threat of physical attack, harassment, or risk to personal safety. The Gold Medal was superseded by the State Department Award for Heroism and has been made obsolete.
