History

The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor was established by President Bill Clinton by Executive Order on June 29, 2000, as the highest award for bravery for United States Public Safety officers. The Star was initially created as the “Presidential Medal of Valor for Public Safety Officers” but was renamed in 2001. The Star is awarded annually in the name of Congress to firefighters and law enforcement officers in recognition of acts of exceptional courage which go above and beyond the call of duty and which risk personal safety in the attempt to save or protect human life.

The Star may also be awarded posthumously.

A miniature gold disc superimposed with the letter “V” is authorized for wear on the ribbon when the ribbon is worn alone.
