The Selective Service System Distinguished Service Medal was established by the Selective Service Director, Curtis Tart, on October 1, 1971. The Gold Medal is awarded to civilian and military Selective Service System personnel in recognition of extraordinary performance or contributions made to the Selective Service Administration.

A rosette is issued with the Medal for wear on the ribbon.

There are 2 versions of the Medal which vary by composition. Early versions are composed of 10-karat gold while later versions are composed of bronze gilt.
