History

The NASA Space Flight Medal was established by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1981. The Medal rewards American and foreign crewmembers of Space Transportation System flights for significant achievement and service in orbital missions in outer space. Civilian employees and military astronauts who have actually flown in outer space are eligible for the award.

A silver Space Flight Cluster is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote subsequent flights. A gold Space Flight Cluster is awarded to denote the 5 silver Space Flight Clusters.

The Medal features an official engraving of the recipient’s name, flight number, and date of the award on the reverse.
