History

The National Intelligence Medal for Valor was initially established by the National Intelligence Awards Program as the “Intelligence Community Medal for Valor” on October 1, 2008, but was renamed the “National Intelligence Medal for Valor” in 2009. The Star is awarded to United States Intelligence Community personnel in recognition of extraordinary acts heroism and courage performed during an intelligence community mission in connection with national security. The Star is often awarded in recognition of clandestine operations in hostile countries.
