History

The NOAA Corps Commendation Medal was established on October 1, 1985. The Medal is awarded to any member of the NOAA Corps in recognition of meritorious and outstanding service, achievement, or sustained leadership that does not merit the recognition of the award of the NOAA Administrators Award, but which is still distinguishing and goes beyond the normal expectation of duties. The Medal may also be awarded in recognition of heroic acts that preserve life and property. Members of other uniformed services who are attached to the NOAA may also be eligible for the award.

A gold star is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote subsequent awards of the Medal. A silver star may be worn in lieu of 5 gold stars.
